Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

  • How do I get started at Hutchinson & Associates?

Call us at (816) 361-0664 or complete the contact form on our website. Include your name, phone number, and the best time to reach you. You'll receive a call to briefly discuss your situation and needs, and we'll match you with the right clinician. That clinician will then contact you to schedule your first appointment.

  • Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No referral is required to schedule therapy. Some insurance plans may require a referral for coverage — check with your insurance carrier. For neuropsychological testing, a physician referral may be required for insurance coverage.

  • How long does it take to get an appointment?

We strive to schedule new Clients as quickly as possible. Availability varies by clinician.

  • Do you offer telehealth / online therapy?

Yes. We offer telehealth appointments for residents of Missouri and Kansas. Please mention your preference for telehealth when you contact us.

  • What do I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring a photo ID (driver's license), your insurance card(s) if applicable, and completed intake forms if you have downloaded them in advance. Intake forms can be found on our website.

Therapy & Treatment

  • What is psychotherapy and how does it work?

Psychotherapy is a structured relationship between a client and a licensed therapist in which you work together to understand and address emotional, behavioral, or relational concerns. Sessions are typically held weekly. Depending on what you're working on, therapy may be brief (8–16 sessions) or longer-term.

  • What types of therapy do you offer?

Our clinicians are trained in a variety of evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, Psychodynamic Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Gottman Method, and mindfulness-based approaches.

  • Do you work with children and adolescents?

Some of our clinicians have experience working with children, teens, and families. Please mention the patient's age when you contact us so we can match you appropriately.

  • Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Everything discussed in therapy is strictly confidential. We comply fully with HIPAA and both federal and Missouri state privacy guidelines. Limited exceptions exist (imminent safety concerns, mandatory reporting of child abuse).

Insurance & Fees

  • Does insurance cover therapy?

Most medical insurance plans cover psychotherapy. We encourage you to contact your insurance carrier to confirm your specific benefits — ask about copay, deductible, number of sessions covered per year, and whether prior authorization is required.

  • Are you in-network with my insurance?

Hutchinson & Associates therapists are affiliated with many insurance panels. Not all therapists are in-network with every plan, but we have made arrangements with many health plans to accept assignment of benefits — meaning we bill your insurance directly and only require your copay, coinsurance, and/or deductible. Contact our office to confirm whether your specific plan is accepted.

  • What if I don't have insurance or my plan isn't accepted?

Your therapist may establish a self-pay agreement with you. Our office can discuss options and payment arrangements. Please don't let insurance uncertainty stop you from reaching out.

  • What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, checks, money orders, American Express, Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. Payments can be made in the office, mailed to 222 W. Gregory Blvd., Suite 100, Kansas City, MO 64114, phoned in to (816) 361-0664 x211, or made online through our secure payment portal.

  • How do I pay my bill online?

You can pay your bill securely through our online payment portal.
