Couples Counseling in Kansas City, Missouri
When a serious relationship is not going well — nothing goes well. Relationship difficulties affect every aspect of life: your mood, your work, your health, and your family. Whatever you and your partner are going through, couples therapy is a good place to start.
At Hutchinson & Associates, our experienced clinicians provide a safe, structured space for couples to do the hard and rewarding work of understanding each other, learning new skills, and rebuilding what matters most.
What Brings Couples to Therapy?
Couples come to us for a wide range of reasons, including:
Communication difficulties — feeling like you're talking past each other
Recurring arguments that never get resolved
Infidelity and rebuilding trust after betrayal
Loss of intimacy or emotional connection
Disagreements about major life decisions — children, finances, career, relocation
Life transitions — new baby, job change, retirement, health crisis
High-functioning stress and perfectionism affecting the relationship
Considering separation or divorce and wanting to explore all options first
Pre-marital counseling and building a strong foundation
Our Approach to Couples Therapy
Relationship issues can be as simple as a lack of communication that prevents understanding, or as complex as opposing views on fundamental life values. Whatever the presenting issues, couples therapy often involves learning new skills in communication, conflict resolution, and compromise — and creating a space to safely discuss the hardest topics.
Our clinicians draw from several evidence-based
approaches to couples work:
Gottman Method
Based on decades of research on what makes relationships work, the Gottman Method helps couples understand their patterns, build friendship and admiration, and manage conflict constructively. Amaya Ballard-Traylor draws on Gottman Method principles in her couples work.
Solution-Focused Therapy
Focuses on identifying what's working and building on it, rather than dwelling on problems. This approach helps couples identify strengths and move toward their vision of a better relationship.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
IFS can be particularly powerful in couples work, helping each partner understand how different 'parts' of themselves contribute to relational patterns.
Cognitive Behavioral Approaches
Addressing the thoughts, interpretations, and behaviors that maintain conflict and distance in relationships.
Do Both Partners Have to Attend?
Couples therapy is most effective when both partners participate. However, if your partner is not ready to attend, individual therapy can also help you clarify what you want from the relationship and develop strategies for engaging your partner differently.
When Should We Seek Couples Therapy?
The sooner you seek help, the better the outcomes tend to be. Many couples wait too long — until the relationship is in acute crisis — before seeking support. If your relationship is tense, if it lacks the intimacy you once had, or if it does not meet your hopes and dreams, that is reason enough to reach out.
Significant relationships are the backbone of our day-to-day life. They deserve the very best we can bring to them.
Non-discrimination: All couples are welcome at Hutchinson & Associates, including same-sex couples and LGBTQ+ identified partners.
How long does couples therapy take?
It varies. Some couples achieve their goals in 10–20 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term work. Your therapist will give you a clearer estimate after your first session.
What happens in the first couples therapy session?
The first session focuses on understanding each partner's perspective, the history of the relationship, and what you each hope to achieve. Your therapist will discuss goals and explain how the process works.
Can couples therapy save a relationship that's in serious trouble?
Couples therapy can be highly effective even in cases of serious conflict or betrayal. However, outcomes depend on both partners' motivation and willingness to engage honestly in the process.
