Depression Treatment in Kansas City, Missouri
Depression is not when you are sad or blue for a day now and then. Depression is when your world looks grey and hopeless — when your eating, sleeping, and libido are off schedule, your concentration is compromised, and life feels listless, too hard, and not any fun.
Depression is a medical condition. It is extremely difficult to simply 'get over' without proper treatment. If you are feeling that life is just too hard, that it holds no surprises or excitement for you, or that things feel unmanageable — please reach out. Effective treatment exists, and you do not have to feel this way.
Understanding Depression
Depression can arise from biological inheritance, situational stressors, trauma, loss, or a combination of factors. Types of depression treated at Hutchinson & Associates include:
Major Depressive Disorder — persistent low mood, loss of interest, and physical symptoms affecting daily functioning
Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia) — a chronic, lower-level depression lasting two years or more
Depression related to life events — grief, job loss, relationship breakdown, health diagnosis
Depression co-occurring with anxiety — very common and fully treatable
Depression related to trauma or PTSD
Postpartum depression and perinatal mood disorders
How We Treat Depression
Depression treatments can include any or all of the following:
Insight and Understanding
Exploring the causes of depression — biological, situational, relational — to build self-awareness and reduce self-blame.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Identifying and changing the thought patterns and behaviors that maintain depression. CBT includes goal-setting, homework, and practical tools for shifting depressive cycles.
Behavioral Activation
Working to change environmental stressors and behavioral patterns — increasing engagement with positive activities, improving sleep hygiene, and reducing avoidance.
Psychodynamic Therapy
For depression rooted in relational patterns or unresolved loss, psychodynamic approaches can provide meaningful and lasting healing.
Medication Referral
When medication may be helpful, we can provide a referral to a psychiatrist or work collaboratively with your prescribing physician. Research consistently shows that therapy combined with medication is more effective than medication alone for moderate to severe depression.
Ongoing Support
Regular therapeutic support through the recovery process — because recovery is not always linear and having consistent, compassionate support matters.
When to Seek Help
The longer depression is left untreated, the more difficult it can be to recover healthy biological functioning. Early treatment can shorten the overall course of depression. Please reach out if you are experiencing:
- Persistent low mood lasting more than two weeks
- Loss of interest in activities you previously enjoyed
- Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy levels
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness
- Thoughts of death or not wanting to be alive
If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide or self-harm, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room immediately.
Can depression be treated without medication?
Yes. Many people achieve significant improvement in depression through therapy alone. Medication is one option — not a requirement — and is most helpful for moderate to severe presentations.
How long does depression treatment take?
It varies. For situational depression, meaningful improvement can come in 12–20 sessions. Recurrent or longstanding depression may benefit from longer-term therapy. Your therapist will give you a realistic timeline after your initial assessment.
I've felt this way for so long I don't know if I can change. Is therapy still worth trying?
Yes. Longstanding depression is treatable. Many people who have felt depressed for years experience significant improvement with the right therapeutic approach. Please don't let past experience of suffering convince you that change is impossible.
