Trauma & PTSD Treatment in Kansas City, Missouri

Facing hardship in life is normal — but there are events so traumatic that they exceed the ability to find healthy ways to cope. Trauma can be recent or as remote as early childhood. Left untreated, trauma and PTSD can cause depression, anxiety, avoidance, nightmares, sleep disturbances, relationship difficulties, and other troubling symptoms that affect every area of life.

At Hutchinson & Associates, we have a depth of experience providing sensitive and effective trauma treatment — even if the distress has been longstanding. We are prepared to help you navigate even the most difficult experiences from your past, at a pace that feels safe for you.

Understanding Trauma and PTSD

Trauma occurs when an experience overwhelms the nervous system's ability to cope. This can be a single event — an accident, assault, medical emergency, or natural disaster — or it can result from prolonged, repeated experiences such as childhood abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or combat.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) develops in some people following trauma. Symptoms include:

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares related to the traumatic event
  • Avoidance of people, places, activities, or thoughts associated with the trauma
  • Negative changes in mood and thinking — including depression, guilt, shame, or detachment
  • Hyperarousal — difficulty sleeping, irritability, exaggerated startle response, or hypervigilance

Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD, but many people benefit from trauma-informed therapy regardless of a formal diagnosis.

Our Treatment Approaches

We offer a variety of trauma treatment approaches, including:

  • How long does trauma treatment take?

It depends on the nature and complexity of the trauma. Some clients experience significant relief in 8–16 sessions of EMDR. Complex or longstanding trauma may require longer treatment. Your therapist will discuss an estimated timeline after your initial assessment.

  • Do I have to talk about the trauma in detail?

Not necessarily. EMDR, in particular, does not require detailed verbal description of the traumatic event. Your therapist will always work at a pace that feels safe for you.

  • What if I've already tried therapy and it didn't help?

We hear this often. Different trauma treatments work for different people. If one approach hasn't worked, EMDR or a different modality may be more effective. Please don't give up — the right treatment can make a significant difference.
